A photograph of a green book standing upright, its pages slightly opened, atop another copy of the same book. The cover features a smaller photo of an aged green book with brown binding. The title at the top reads in an all-caps serif font, "William Kentridge Lexicon" A photograph of a book spread atop two stacked green books that read "William Kentridge Lexicon" on the spine. The book spread shows a frenetic drawing in black ink over tiny, dense text. The drawing resembles the profile of a cat with its head facing left and its tail curled slightly upward on the right page.

William Kentridge: Lexicon

1

Description

Lexicon is a facsimile cloth edition of an antiquarian Latin-Greek dictionary embelled by the internationally celebrated South African artist William Kentridge (born 1954). In reproducing the work, this beautifully designed artist’s book mischievously pits the model of the flipbook against the fragility of the antiquarian original. Flipping its pages animates Kentridge’s lively, frenetic drawings into a continuously morphing image that transforms from a cat to a coffee pot over the course of the book’s 160 pages. Based on a disintegrating sculpture, this book reflects the artist’s interest in the instability of objecthood.
