A pink book stands upright atop two other copies against a gray background. Titled "John Currin: The Dogwood Thieves," the book features a painting on its cover of two blonde women smiling and holding one another. The shorter woman on the left is holding a hat over her body, while the woman on the right is wearing a bra with a shawl over her shoulders. In her left hand, she holds a small branch with white blossoms that partially obscures her companion's face. A pink book stands upright atop two other copies against a gray background. It is spread open to show two pages: one the left is a mostly blank page with three short paragraphs, about a sentence or two each, at the center. On the right is a painting of two older white women smiling and embracing one another. They are both bare-chested. The woman on the left holds a hat over her body while the woman on the right has a shawl draped over her left shoulder and arm..

John Currin: The Dogwood Thieves

1

Description

In 2004, John Currin (born 1962) began a large-scale painting that would eventually be titled The Dogwood Thieves. Starting with a photograph from a magazine advertisement, he altered the painting several dozen times of the course of six years until he was satisfied with the composition. This publication is based on a lecture given by Currin in August 2010 at the Arcadia Summer Arts Program.
