Description

Catalogue for Jonathan Bepler’s site-specific installation piece Invisible Dances for Broken Ensemble, created for the 2007 exhibition New Media/New Materials: Highlights in Contemporary Art from The Fabric Workshop and Museum, hosted by the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. For this installation, Bepler explored the way sound from acoustic instruments could be used to represent movement throughout a room. Around the perimeter of the room, 8 microphones were dispersed evenly and used to record him playing the instruments in different locations. Each microphone was then fed through its own channel into the playback system, thus creating an ensemble effect that would mimic the performer being in multiple places at once.
