An opened umbrella with a black and white speckled pattern leans diagonally with both part of its shell as well as its wooden handle resting on the same surface. Underneath it is a closed umbrella just like it, lying on the surface and pointing away from the viewer; its wooden handle at the lower center of the image. The shell of an umbrella with a black and white speckled pattern faces the viewer. Lying down in front of it is a closed version of the same umbrella that stretches length-wise across the image with its wooden handle curling toward the viewer on the left.

Description

Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s Notebook design is one of The Fabric Workshop and Museum’s most iconic collaborations. Initially inspired by standard stationer’s supplies, the design evolved “to look more like the black-and-white blobs on the covers of composition notebooks that American children use in school.” The artists' skillful manipulation of the effects of scale, rhythm, color, and association make it an extremely versatile and popular product design. Here, it's used as the rain proof shell of a beautiful wood-handled umbrella.
